Family fun in the Chicago Winter

With the kind encouragement of my sister - I have decided to become an online presence again (YAY!) and post some pictures and stories from our December and November here in Chicago. This endeavor is immensely easier now that finals are over (and my typing fingers are refreshed :)

Rella and I enjoy the array of options for activities here in chicago, but first of all ,there is quite a bit of fun to be had at the fort:

I just LOVE buying craft supplies and seeing what Rella does with them - here she is playing with paints.

For a Radiology Conference (held in the massive Mckormwick Center in Downtown Chicago) Leah and Cody came to town! Leah was just in time to help cut Rella's hair (thank you leah! I don't really know what I would have done :)

This is just a nice classic picture of Rella in one of her contemplative moods - doesn't she look like Duane with those big eyes?

I will be doing a separate post on some of the activities we have done this month!

A New (Robotic) Member of the Family

So I (Duane) don't normally write blog posts on our family blog, but Leah twisted my arm. Plus, I have something exciting to share.

I guess I'm less of a journaller and more of an abstract thinker (see this blog for my more abstract ramblings). Anyway, I'm here today, and thanks to Kelty, I have the WHOLE day to play on the newest gadget in our home: an Ultimaker 3D printer!

(In addition to the Macbook Pro, you'll notice our pet rat, Witzy, in the glass aquarium above the Ultimaker).

The Ultimaker is a DIY kit project--it's shipped to you as parts, and you get to assemble it on your own. The advantage is that if anything needs maintenance later on, well, you know how it goes together and you can fix it yourself. The disadvantage is, well, you have to build it yourself and it takes about 12 hours.

So what can you do with a 3D printer? Design stuff! Print things! The whole world is going to change, again! My prediction is that the ability to create things at home will be as life-changing as the introduction of the PC in 1970 or so. Just wait, you'll see :)

Here's what I've been making:

A plug for our bathroom tub.

It fits snugly.

A "child safety" clip for our cupboards.

I think it looks pretty stylish.

And last but not least, a key rack, with semi-circular hooks.
This took about 1.5 hours to print.

I'm part of the community of "makers" who are creatively going about solving problems and making things just for fun. There's a web site called Thingiverse where I post what I create and share the source code and plans with others.

If someone were to ask me "if I only had one chance to see a museum in Chicago, what Museum should I pick?"

Can you guess what I would say?

What other museum has a real giraffe cadaver in the lobby?

Now, I don't meant to trivialize the sacred life of animals and humans by being amazed in the "Bodies" exhibit - but it's really incredible how intricate and detailed we are inside. With a membership to the museum, Bodies is only one of the many changing exhibits that we get to see. The unchanging exhibits are so varied and marvelous too - after 20+ visits I can say I still haven't seen them all (though, I did get to go down in the "Mine" the other day, what an experience!)

Well, if there are any readers left out there, here's a little bit about us:

Equine Therapy Poster Fair - Monday, June 20th

(insert photo here, in your mind, of me and a poster - I am between computers and don't have any photo's right now!)

Yesterday, for three hours, I had a chance to present my poster on Equine Therapy. Any surprise I choose equine therapy? I hope not :)

Here's the scoop: At the end of our 200 hours of service for Grad school, we prepare and present a poster on what we did. Then all the school (and some judges for a prize) come to see the posters and ask questions.

No, I didn't win any prizes, but I did meet some awesome people! (even better, in some ways)

Hygiene Drive the Kelty Way

Have you ever passed a food or hygiene items drive and felt guilty that you forgot to bring your donations yet AGAIN?

I have.

For a small fundraiser at the Adler School, the Marriage and Family Student Association (MAFSO for short) put on this hygiene drive.

Here's the deal: Those who want to donate bring 25 cents or 50 cents or even a dollar and choose the items they want to donate. Then they "pay" for the items by putting them in the piggy bank and put the items in the donation bin. So far, it sounds like the donations are going well! Here's a little snapshot:

The Hygiene Items will be going to the Chicago Night Ministry (it's a really cool program) There are several components to the program, but one of the major parts is a bus that runs through Chicago at night delivering goods to the homeless or those in need. What a cool, creative idea!

The money donated will go to the Red Cross for the Japan Relief fund. Go MAFSO!

Visit to Utah

This past Easter (I know, I know, it's been AWHILE since Easter, but better late than never, right?) I had the blessing of being in Provo, Utah, with my Mamacita :)

We were excited to join my Aunt Tricia (famous for her hostessing and all around kindness) for a splendid Easter Meal. It was fun to see my cousins little one's run around the yard to pick up over 100 easter eggs that Kiji made for them.

Hello All!

As you may (or may not) know I am currently volunteering at an equine therapy site called FTEA which is short for "Friends for Theraputic Equine Activities" Where I am learning alot and completing hours for my Community Service Practicum at Adler.

Recently a film crew came to highlight the program, and I had an opportunity to talk with the crew and am in a few clips :) The first 30 sec. have a couple shots of me leading a horse, but that is definitly not the best part - if you have 4 min. watch the whole thing!

Visiting Grace

This Post is coming MUCH too late - but I had the opportunity to visit my beautiful new nice "Grace" at the end of May (Thank you Jill and Arian for letting me hold her!)

Grace came into the world through c-section with a very brave momma. When my Mom and I drove into St. George Utah (My brother and his family live in Mesquite, NV, but the best hospital for this birth was an hour away in St. George) it was the DAY OF the birth - and the new parents still welcomed us with open arms. If you notice a white patch on Grace's head, it's from an IV delivering needed nutrients as the little one needed to be in the NICU for a couple of days.

Thank you, Grace, for coming into the world.

The Chicago Museum

What Amazes me is the willingness with which daddy took care of all the housekeeping and childcare duties so I could go off and relax and visit family.

Our 'Drop-in' Guests

More than once, Rella have been going about our merry day when suddenly, we see a man appear out of nowhere! He is swinging in front of our window, using what looks like a large suction cup to hold on and wield his window-cleaning tools. It's quite a sight, one you would only get in a high-rise building, when it's window cleaning day.

We are usually warned ahead of time when these cleaners will be ascending the building, but I don't really keep details like that in my brain, and so I usually get a nice surprise every few months. Here is a cute video of Rella watching our brave window cleaner.

Keep in mind, we are on the 17th floor. There are 54 floors in total in our building. These guys do them all!

The Transhumanist Opera

An Opera about computers - can we say date night!? It's almost like "Death and the Power's" was designed for eager Duane and Kelty Minds.

Just to spotlight some of the effects in this show: Algorithmic set pieces that moved of their own accord, floor-to-ceiling screens anthropomorphizing the main character after death, robots who gather to discuss the meaning of "grief", a scene with a woman speaking to a chandelier.

Yep, it all sounds a little bizarre, at best, but it was really stunning. The story was about a man who transposed his personality into "the system" meaning, at the time of his death, he put his personality and memories into a computer. Initially, his family members that were still alive weren't sure if the process really worked, that their loved one could actually 'live' in the machine. It becomes clear, however, that the man in the machine is actually living and dying to some extent.

I think what most interested me was the use of robots as actors. This show took ten years to create, and was initially inspired by an MIT professor who wanted to tell the story of an individual living through their machine. Below is a sneak peak if you are interested.

Best part of all: the theater at which this show debeuted is on our block! We caught the last show, but I think this production signals a transition to incorporating technology into our art forms.

Duane's Robotics Competition

On the Wednesday evening of March 16th, Duane packed his bags for Duluth, Minnesota. What's in Duluth? Well, after an all night bus ride, the Chicago Knights were there, along with Duane.

Below is a quick video (I'd watch the first minute or two) to get a feeling for what these competitions are like - this is a video from a past competition, but you get the idea of how fun this can be! (and what a great experience it is for the students)

For several months now Duane has been a mentor for a youth program in Robotics, his team is called the Chicago Knights. This high school group meets several times a week (along with Duane after work), and builds robots to bring to such competitions as mentioned above.

This particular competition housed hundreds of student groups from all over adjoining states, and unleashed the power of one man-sized robot for each team. Similar to a chess tournament, each team goes through rounds until the two most successful robots battle.

I liked how the local paper titled the article on Chicago Knights:

Marriage and Family Therapy Conference

Hello fellow bloggers and blog readers :)

During a weekend in February, I attended a conference in Marriage and Family Therapy. Among the interesting speakers there, there was also an option to attend a section on EQUINE THERAPY

Can you guess what I did?

Our un-mounted session included three problem solving exercises built from the EAGALA model (EAGALA is one of three main institutions available for Equine Therapy Accreditation, the other two are CHA and NARHA)

Anyway, During the session we tried to move the horses without any materials (like halters or lead ropes) and the photographer at the conference caught some neat moments with me and two of the horses (they were following me around the arena)

I was actually thrilled to see this new model of Equine Therapy, and impressed with the Reins of Change Program - maybe I'll be sending blogs from there in the future! Here I am with my "serious" listening face.

Parenting Principles

Hello! For those of you who are interested, I decided to compile some of the 'parenting principles' I've been learning in Graduate School. None of these points hold true all of the time, in all situations. Some of this will be obvious. However, I thought a quick overview might be beneficial for some of you parents out there! Here it goes :

Any attention paid to a behavior (positive OR negative) will reinforce that behavior
Self esteem and an ability to cooperate spark from children learning to contribute to the family. (for example, they feel best when they can contribute to the family in realistic,tangible ways)
Every child struggles with feelings of inferiority and powerlessness that they strive to overcome. Their striving is sometimes manifest in positive behaviors, and sometimes through negative behaviors.
It is important for children to find positive ways to overcome their feelings of inferiority or powerlessness.
Children need as many opportunities as possible to do things for themselves. Good parenting, in a way, is working yourself out of a job.
When possible, allow natural consequences take the place of artificial ones.
Try to plan for negative behaviors before they happen, and figure out a logical consequence ahead of time if possible.
Family dinner time! It’s great!
Family Dinner Time – This time should be set aside to have fun, wind down, and learn more about each-other
Try to save “school” talks for another time (outside of dinner), that is what the child needs to unwind from!
Pick you’re battles, and try to engage in a positive way with your child for every time you have a negative interaction. If at all possible, strive to have much more positive than negative interactions.

What do Chicago and California have in common?

This week there was a Johnson in both places!

Duane ventured over to California for a computer conference with several GETCO Co-workers (dosen't he look happy? Computer conferences tend to do that to duane :)
And thanks to our wonderful friends, Sashi and David, he had a cozy home while there.

While here in Chicago a blizzard kept things lively. News reports deemed it the worst blizzard in the Chicago area since 1967.

I must say, it was a sight to see many of the grocery stores shelves empty when I went grocery shopping a few days after the blizzard. We were lucky and didn't loose any power, though I heard that several other buildings along lake Shore did.

Wednesday evening the blizzard hit it's peak - while our building shuddered (and mothers in our building emailed back and forth to discuss how much the building seemed to be swaying) the major highway right beside our home looked like this:

If you look closely, you can see our building in the background of this video - it's the tall black one.

Rest assured - all is well. The streets have been plowed, and Rella had her first romp in the snow. Duane returns home from sunny California tomorrow - I'll make sure he knows all the fun he missed :)

Rella's First Birthday Party!!!

On Jan. 27th Rella officially turned 1, and we had a PAR-TAY.

Of course, it was all for Rella, who won't remember a thing (except, perhaps, eating the cake) and it had nothing to do with her mom's secret desire to have a my little pony coloring contest, or eat costco cake, or meet up with friends and play loud music while dancing.

It most certainly had nothing to do with Rella's parents wanting to have a cake fight amidst giggles at the end of the night.

Nope - it was all for her ;)

Winter Aquarium Show

The Shedd Aquarium is incredible - and it's only a 15 minute walk away. Which is why Rella and I enjoy staying up to date on the latest live shows.

Below is a clip of the 'New and Improved' aquatics show - the biggest improvement is a screen that stretches all the way from the floor to the ceiling behind the tank. On this screen, they project enlarged video of the animals, so you can really see what is going on. That is the round thing you will see in the background.

If I had the time, I would volunteer to do the "tank dives" - someday!

Essential Gear for Winter Riding

I recently acquired a new set of insulated Riding boots -

OH JOY!! Warm feet.

Which are essential if you would like to keep all your toes through the winter here in Chicago. On a regular day out at the barn, I will be wearing up to 7 layers on my top, and 4 layers on my bottom. In this picture, I am actually wearing 3 layers on the bottom, and 4 layers on the top, so not all the layers are very thick.

With my new boots, I feel like a winter princess. . . and my next order of business is to get an insulated crown.

Duane back in London

This January, Duane had a chance to visit London, England again for work at his companies London branch. The week he was there was highlighted with more historic sites and meeting up with friends. One day Duane met up with a childhood friend from Canada, who is currently an artist in London (as well as a clothes designer). The next picture is of Duane in front of a building at Oxford, where he met up with my brother, Arian. Luckily, their trips overlapped and they both had an excelled time over a 'pint' of cranberry juice at the local tavern. :) Finally, there is a picture of some of the horse statues at the tower of London. Of course there must be a horse picture in here somewhere :P

Rella's Fine Motor Skills

To watch Rella discovering the world is. . . well, thrilling. Humbling. Beautiful.

Rella has developed leaps and bounds since her first months. She can do so many things:

Say "Dada"
Wave Goodbye (and even sometimes 'Hello')
Understand when I say 'No'
Feed herself, drink from a sippy cup
cruise (walk a bit) between furniture
crawl lightening fast
Ride her little tricycle (I have attached a sting, and daily pull her around the building)
Stack blocks and put blocks on pegs
Act like she is reading a book
Mimic swimming in the downstairs pool
Smile for the camera

There are other things that Rella can do, many which are more nuanced. Between Duane, Myself, and our awesome nanny, Targol, Rella gets lots of playing and learning in her day. When daddy comes home, she shouts with glee (I think I finally understand the primary song "I'm so glad when daddy comes home, glad as I can be, clap my hands and shout for joy. . . )

Haha, now I got the song in your head (if you know it) I had no idea she could do so much by 12 months.

It's not just the things that she can do. . . but the little person inside that is emerging. That is what amazes me. I can already tell Rella will be a loving, kind person. She is also curious, passionate (as I guess all toddlers are) and very aware of other people.

I can't count the number of times we have entered the elevator (which we do several times a day) and in walks a glum Chicagoean looking ready to exit into the winter cold. Immediately, Rella catches the person's eye, and once she has it, she displays her radiant smile two tiny front teeth. I've seen the most unhappy looking people light up when this happens. It makes my day as well.

Degree in. . . service?!

As I am working to finish a degree in Counseling (Marriage and Family Therapy, to be specific, however I will also be qualified to do the regular 1 on 1 therapy) I get to have some neat experiences ad Adler.

While completing credits (61 total) students are also required to complete two practicums:

A 200-hour Community Service Practicum where students work on a volunteer basis. First student apply for several sites, and then they are matched with a site that meets their interest. Needless to say I did my best to go equine - and it worked out for me! More on that later.

A 700-hour Clinical Practicum where students conduct normal therapy sessions with the guidance of a Licensed supervisor. Since I am going the Marriage and Family route, a portion of those hours will be with families and couples (I can't wait!)

IF you are interested in what happens after graduation. . .

After Graduation, I will apply to license as an LPC (licensed professional counselor) and from there I will work for a total of 3000 hours (at a site where there is a licensed supervisor) and at that point I can sit for the LCPC and LMFT licensures (whew! the acronyms - Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, and Licensed Marital and Family Therapist)

The biggest difference between graduation and those higher licensures is an inability to start a private practice, however, after the higher licensures are attained, I can go private or continue to work at a paid office.

IF you are interested in what I'm doing for my practicums. . .

My Community Service Practicum (a fancy way to say "volunteering") has begun at FTEA (see above) I'm already enjoying this experience immensely, and taking many notes for my future 'dream' equine therapy facility.

FTEA's mission is to provide equine assisted therapy for children and adults with physical and mental disabilities.

As you can imagine, "physical and mental disabilities" can mean a wide range of behaviors, and though we have not started the lesson season yet, I am interested in the types of riders we will be helping.

One of my main jobs will be 'Sidewalking' - to make sure rider and horse are safe

Not only is FTEA a creative program in the Illinois Area offering Equine Therapy, but they are certified through NARHA

NARHA stands for "The North American Handicapped Riding Association." This is the most prominent programs and instructor training certifications available for Equine Therapy.

Though I am accredited through CHA (which I have mixed feelings about, called the Certified Horsemanship Association) which is the most prominent Equine Instructor Certification in the U.S. - Training in NARHA could be a valuable asset in my Equine Therapy Work. Not only does a certified instructor decrease insurance costs, they are affiliated with a progressive program that standardizes the Equine Therapy experience.

Now, the question is: Do I decide to certify? Time will tell.

In the meantime, I'm having a jolly time getting to know the instructors, enjoying the informal environment, and looking forward to starting to help with clients next week. What a great way to put together therapy and horses!

Horses are my therapy, that's for sure.

For my clinical practicum, I have not yet begun researching sites. One thing I DO know, I will work hard to find a site and supervisor that can help me learn the most possible!

Duane back in London

But he come's back tomorrow!!! Rella and I can't wait :) Duane has become a very savvy traveler since his good old Rock Creek days. I guess I wanted to write a post about him for just that reason: I'm proud of him.

I'm proud of the father that he is, and is becoming. Rella just lights up when she sees him. It just can't be stated enough how wonderful it is to see a caring parent grow with their child.

We all carry our own histories, often laden with some hidden pain, but I'll tell you one thing that can almost always lift the spirit - watching a father and daughter laugh together.

But I digress. . .

Thank you Duane for working so hard, thank you for being a good man, husband, and father. We are excited to see you soon!

Off to School

Yes - I like learning. Duane snapped this shot of me bundled up and ready to head to my last class of fall semester (Can't you just see the "last class of the semester" joy?!)

My Graduate School in Psychology runs on a Trimester Schedule (and no, we don't have a baby at the end - we graduate)

Our three semesters are: Fall, Spring, Summer

Someone, very wise, decided to ax the winter semester, just to help us lift our spirits. However, I must admit, there is something that feels slightly wrong when I walk outside in "spring" semester and it's -7 degrees.

Winter in Chicago - on the left is one of my favorite sculptures in the city. It's a beautiful woman with her arms flung open, though she doesn't have arms but large leaves. Here's another picture of a the same type of sculpture in Chicago against a summer backdrop:

The first two classes are normal "sit in a classroom classes" while the community Service is going to be something special.

I decided I wanted to make these mandatory 200 hours of service in line with my greater goals in life, so I found an equine therapy center about an hour from the city and registered the site with the school so I could serve there. It's called:

Raising a Baby in the City

"What is it like to raise a baby in the city?" some have asked me. Other than flying the questioner out to Chicago, and having them live in the middle of the city, and somehow give them a baby, I thought I'd make things simple and write some of my thoughts :)

First of all - it's really important to keep Rella bundled up - Chicago gets very cold in the winter.

Some of our inside activities: Rella and I will take a dip in the warm pool, go shopping at the downstairs grocery store, or play in the playroom (video below). The pool especially is a great way to work out while having fun with Rella - who is already quite the little fish.

Though there is less nature here at our fingertips in the city (something I miss alot) I can still take Rella out of the City. For now, we are happy little clams.

Duane's Robotics Competition

Though I am a little behind in blogging, this one will interest all you "Duane Fan's" out there. On December 6th, 2010 Duane lead his Chicago Knights Robotics Team at a robotics competition hosted at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The program that provides these competitions is called "First Robotics"

Duane worked with his team at this all day event competing in different robotics competitions where teams would "play the field" with their robots. This years competition involved the robots taking batons out of a holder, crossing bridges, and placing the batons in their goals. Different moves gave the robot teams different points, and the total points at the end of the game determined the winner. It was so cool to see these robots maneuver! Remember, these are made primarily by high school students, which makes it even cooler.

Duane did a great job sorting out rules and getting his team to the right places at the right times. Though his team didn't win any awards, it was a great learning experience, and everyone had fun. I showed up halfway through the day with some refreshments, and found Duane like this:

It wasn't always that way, but slowly through the years, she has built up a collection of scrumptious creations she can make at the drop of a hat. Duane and I have always relished the good food we often get to eat at Leah's home, and this thanksgiving was no different. Everything was ready RIGHT ON TIME (harder to do that you might think) and the Turkey was totally moist. Ok, now I'm making myself hungry. I think Duane actually made his stomach go from concave to flat for this meal (teehee) One of Leah's more recent creations:

We packed up the car (and Rella) and enjoyed the 7 hour drive from Chicago, IL to Columbus, Oh. We broke up the trip with a surprise trip to a Bed and Breakfast that Duane arranged.

It was an INCREDIBLE old house in Indiana that was run by a former Actor - PLUS my favorite part of many B and B's: Open Snacks :D

Duane and I enjoy learning about homes and the people who lived in them, a tradition that started with our first spontaneous Bed and Breakfast stay in Butte, Montana. This one is called the "Copper king Mansion" because it was pretty much made from money during the copper rush in Butte. Amazing experience.

When we arrived, we were greeted with Enthusiasm! Rella was SO excited to get OUT of the car - Here she is with the Mr. Cody:

Thanksgiving Seder

In November (It's true. . . I'm a little tinsey bit behind :) Duane and I attended a "Thanksgiving Seder" Where we learned about the traditions of the Jewish faith around this time of year. It was a beautiful Venue, and we enjoyed the program there was a retelling of the story of the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Ancient Egypt.

Every Tuesday and Thursday evening, Duane goes off to "Robotics Land" at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Actually, the program is quite neat where Duane is Mentoring High school students who are interested in Technology - it's great for them to learn from Duane's knowledge in the field, and it's neat for Duane to learn how to lead a team ! This past year we have been delighted to spend as much 'free-time' as we can muster to spend with our friends Matt and Lisa. They are so amazing! I know that is a non-descriptive word, but it describes them so well! Here they are making us dinner - at our house - now isin't that the coolest?

Even though Matt is busy with his career in economics and Lisa is busy getting through one of the most difficult Law School programs in the nation, they still find time to join us on our crazy adventures.

While adults can moderately adjust to a 6-hour difference in time zones, Babies cannot. This little tidbit of information came to me at about 2:30am the first night in London (lol) Thus, while Mr. Duane needs as much sleep as possible to complete his mission here in London, I have been using my creativity to keep Rella as happy as possible through the night.

Rella usually goes to sleep between 1 and 2 am, London time. The best part about this is that she is asleep in the morning until about noon! That means this momma can put her little girl in a stroller and stroll around London. The difficult thing about this is that there is only so much to be done in a hotel room that is entertaining for a 9 month-old. I do my best

The Main Worship Space in the Cathedral

This Anglican Cathedral is 'awe-inspiring' - you have to be there to experience it, because it is difficult to describe. Duane and I attended the 'sung Eucharist' this morning, and truly enjoyed it. The robes, the angelic voices, and the beautiful murals all over the walls and ceilings made for a rich sensory experience. I can see how this is a form of worship for many.

On another day, Rella and I also had a chance to visit the Tombs underneath the Cathedral where thousands have been buried and commemorated. For some, there were large, beautiful monuments. For others, when the price for being buried flat was too high, they were buried standing up. Nevertheless, being buried at this Cathedral has been considered a great honor since the 11th Century. I learned later that I should not have taken this photo - sorry St. Paul's Cathedral!

Rella - the good sport

Yay for first timers! Duane and I have been unabashed tourists these past few days in "The City of Cities" Duane had an opportunity to go to the GETCO London office on Business, and we made a family trip out of it!

The trip over: Wednesday Oct. 19th

We had the most interesting conversation with our Italian Cab Driver about his youth, and how he lives with his father in "Little Italy" Chicago. It's true that Italian Families often stick together!

These are HUGE airplanes! At least, this is the first time I've been on a 767. They have 7 seats in a row, and each seat has it's own Screen with movies. Of course, we didn't do much Movie watching as Rella was very excited about her new experience. She slept most of the night on our 7 hour flight (direct) to the Heathrow Airport, and I watched the segments from the same three movies (The newest Twilight, The newest Toy Story, and Mary Poppins) over and over again throughout the night (they were just replaying, lol)

Compact Packing for International Travel (Compact for US!)

When I watched Mary Poppins I thought of my Mom, who LOVES the film, and how perfect it was to watch a film from London on the way there. (By the way, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!!!)

We arrived in London at 8:30 AM (London Time) the following Morning, very tired. We had a 2 hour 'cabby' ride over, and let me tell you, I was GLAD he was driving and NOT ME. (In addition to the fact I was 'asleep on my feet' if you know what I mean)

People here have the most wonderful accents (or, they probably think I'm the one with the accent)

Duane and I were talking last night, and began to marvel about the trips we've enjoyed this year. Since this blog is also a sort of Diary, I wanted to highlight this year as

"2010 THE YEAR OF TRAVELS"

Banff, Canada - Duane, Kelty and Rella spend a week with Duane's family (Grandma Beth, brothers Chris and Dan, and sisters Sarah and Amber) at a cabin in the British Columbia wilderness. Forays into the forest included: Jumping into ice cold lakes, visiting radium hot springs, and many nights with music around the campfire :)
Provo, Utah - Kelty and Rella spend a week visiting Grandpa Gordon, Aunt Mel, and other good friends. Rella's getting to be a 'frequent flyer' now :)
Oakley, Utah - Duane, Kelty and Rella spend a week at the Woolley Cabin with Brother Arian and Family, Sister Leah and Family, and 'Grandma Ginger'. 4-wheeling and camping trips were just the tip of the family fun iceberg!
Columbus, OH - Kelty and Rella drove to Visit Leah and Cody with daughters: Brinley, Avery and Aspen
Portland, OR - Duane attends a computer languages conference (OSCON - Open Source Conference, as Duane corrects me) in the beautiful city of Portland for his company.
Fat Blossom Farm, Michigan - Duane, Kelty and Rella go for a weekend camping trip with fellow church members!
San Fransisco California - Duane and Brother Danny attend a conference about the future called the 'Singularity Summit' for Duane's Birthday!!!
Provo, Utah - Kelty and Rella Visit Grandma Ginger and attend the Ceder City Shakesperean Festival with Grandma and Bonsie, then go to the Pah Temp hot springs, and then do some visiting with Aunt Mel and Riding at Oak Hills Stable. Rella is near achieving her Elite Platinum Frequent Flier status so she can be first in line.

But wait!! The year is not done yet!!

Richmond, Virginia - This Thursday (in 2 days!) Rella and Kelty are headed to Virginia to visit Kelty's daddy (Gordon) and Kelty's Grandma Lewis - she can't wait!! Also, for a day, Kelty and Rella are renting a car (Rella said she would go halfsies with me) to visit Kelty's childhood friend Ann!

AND ANNOUNCING - (excited cry of glee) a Trip to London, England Oct. 19th through the 27th for Duane, Kelty, and Rella! YES it's true! Kelty's long time dream of visiting the Original Shakespeare Globe Theater is coming to fruition!! You can bet there will be more updates on THAT.

A visit from Arian!

This last weekend, my brother Arian visited us for a day (yes, he is rather travel savvy, and flew in from Las Vegas for a Wednesday evening meeting, and then stayed on thursday to hang out) Rella loves her Uncle!

Thursday morning Arian and I hopped over to Julius Meinl - the most wonderful place in Chicago for Nutella Crepes! Then Arian and Duane had lunch while I hosted a booth at my schools "Student Organization Fair" (More on my involvement in this student organization coming soon) and after lunch right by the sears tower, Arian and I spent the afternoon connecting, lounging, and had a dinner out at a great italian restaurant (although we both picked this interesting looking italian soft drink that turned out tasting like cough syrup) just before Arian left - we toured the Chicago cultural center where President Obama was just weeks before! While there we ran into an amazing Indian Festival, and I seriously considered getting a henna tattoo.

Thanks for coming Arian!!! We loved having you :)

Chicago Mother's Group

For the last few months, I have had the honor of meeting with this amazing group of mom's I met through the northwestern Memorial Hospital parenting program.

On the left is Kiarri (currently completing her post-doc), in the middle is Amy (business entrepreneur) , and on the right is Kate (Green design entrepreneur). I have learned so much about LIFE and MOTHERING from these gals.

Each week we choose a different location to meet at - and I have learned about some fabulous places in the city! We like to hit the "museum free days" on some trips, and often eat at small-creative restaurants for breakfast or lunch. I fondly call our group the 'stroller brigade' because when all 4 of us are together - you better JUMP off the sidewalk or else your not gettin' through (haha, just kidding, we would move aside, but seriously folks, have you ever seen 4 strollers/joggers in one place? They take up alot of room!)

Things to do with Daddy

Duane is such a dedicated daddy, and often spends his evenings giving me a break, and also Rella a chance to laugh and play. Our new tradition is reading together in the evening - I sure hope Rella likes Science Fiction!

When Duane and i are both in a pinch to get something done, we have a LIFESAVER which I have appropriately deemed the "over stimulation station" (thank you, thank you, thank you LEAH and CODY for lending this handy little piece of equipment) Rella loves to bang everything within reach on this little pod.

Duane is also great at opening up Rella's palate to new tastes: Here is her first strawberry (NO, my child is NOT rabid - thank you very much - that is whipped cream. Hmmfph) with an interesting look on her face, like, 'whaaat is this?'

Swimming With Rella

Rella has developed a taste for swimming (actually, it really is a taste, for when I turn my back just for a second, she manages to dip her head down and gulp up a little water every time!)

Rella has learned that when I or Duane says "Kick, Kick" with a high pitched voice, that means that she has to kick her legs! she actually gets going when she is in the pool.

I also love the pool at the bottom of our building because A) it is often empty B) Immaculately clean and C) has very little chlorine. Rella and I go just about every other day.

A success every time! She also loves the shower at the end of the swim in the locker rooms, and is very brave in sticking her head right under the flow of water! I'll try to get a video sometime of this little mermaid.

Wrapping up Utah Trip (Sept. 2nd through 7th)

Utah WAS memorable, I've just been neglecting my blogposts lately. I apologize to you, my dedicated readers, for I know you have just been hanging on, asking yourself before going to bed each night "When is Kelty going to finish telling us about her most recent trip? oh when?!"

Well, here I am, In all my glory, to tell you about the last bit of our most memorable trip to Utah. You can now breathe a sigh of relief.

After the Shakespeare Festival in Ceder City (a few posts ago) I had a wonderful day to visit some of my equine and human friends:

Labor day Rella and I enjoyed visiting with My Aunt Mel. After being a teacher for MANY years, (and I must mention that not one of her students forgets her, for there have been several times when we are 'out on the town together' and a guy or gal comes up to us saying 'Miss Lewis!!' and telling us about how they remember her) She is now a Computer Lab Teacher - And I must say it is the type of lab I would have ABSOLUTELY LOVED when I was little, just look at the fun decorations!

That's not all, every day that kids come in, there are fun projects that they do on their shiny new macs ranging from making online pictures, to accessing the Internet, to learning how to produce online works of art. It's really incredible. I think my Aunt Mel has reached 'celebrity status' at her school.

That afternoon, I also visited Oak Hills stable, and enjoyed a most wonderful ride with my favorite instructor, Maryann Ford, and one of my other favorite furry companions - Moroni :)

Adler's New Campus!!!

While in Utah, Rella and I had an Awesome time visiting Grandma Ginger (or "G-G" for short :) and experiencing several other amazing events!

Rella and I hopped on the train to O'hare airport Thursday (Sept. 2nd) in the morning.
Then Grandma Ginger was waiting at the SLC airport with open arms (and several yummy things to eat, as usual) to take Rella and I back to Provo. I like to refer to my growing-up home as my 'sanctuary' - because when I get to visit there, I have a sense of peace, and belonging, that is unique to a place that is home in one's heart.

Friday morning, Rella, Grandma Ginger, and I picked up Bonnie (or 'Bonsie' as we nicknamed her with fondness early on in the friendship) and we drove down to the

A yearly tradition for the Family since I was a little girl (so many good memories) Friday evening, while Bonsie cared for Rella (Thank you Bonsie!!!) Mom and I watched

"The Merchant of Venice" - on the outdoor Globe theater stage

Such a great production of the age old tale about a Jewish lender and his Christian debtor. When the debtor defaults, the Jewish lender insists on his 'pound of flesh' owed upon forfeit. The Jewish Lender (shylock) has many reasons why he feels intense hatred towards his Christian Lendee, but when he insists on taking a pound of flesh from the heart of his debtor - a court decides the fate of both lender and borrower.

The following morning, Bonsie, Mom, Rella and I headed to the acclaimed "Pah Tempe" Hot springs in Hurricane, Utah. It was gorgous (Thanks mom for the Awesome pictures!) Rella was quiet as an observer during the entire adventure, and near the end caught on to the glee of the moment and started splashing around in the river that was so high I had to swim at some points.

Following our Pah-Tempe adventure, we headed back to Ceder City to see "Much Ado about Nothing" set in a wine-distillery. It is a great comedy to begin with, but the actors outdid themselves with making me laugh.

After enjoying a drive back to Provo, I spend my last days with other good friends (thanks to mom's babysitting abilities) More on that coming soon!

Visiting Daddy for Lunch

When Rella and I are needing a walk (or, more exactly, when Rella needs a 'sit' and I need a 'walk') We enjoy some lunch rendevous with Duane.

Here are some of our favorite lunch places in the heart of the city:

this is a 'fast-food' asian place that specializes in different kinds of dumplings - yum!

My personal favorite - seriously good sandwiches and shakes, and there is usually live entertainment too!

Another GREAT sandwich place, specializing in fresh sandwiches (hate to say it, but Subway has a big competitor)

And my new favorite, Soprafinna, a very fresh italian place. Have I tempted you to come to Chicago yet?!! :)

Jill my Sister-in-law and her daughter, Audrey came to visit us in the city (The two gals in this awesome family picture)

what a great couple of days! We had our usual late night talks, and Duane visited with us before going off to his Artificial Intelligence conference in San Fransisco (more coming on that soon). Here pictured with Audrey at another family event:

Saturday morning we visited the chopping block for a "Chicken 101 Class". Seriously folks, I've never seen so many ways to make a chicken in my LIFE! Each group made about 4 different chicken dishes, and Jill volunteered to do the hard stuff (for which I was greatly relieved, considering I might have mixed the kitchen chemicals instead of the pesto) and we had a great feast afterwards. (sorry this picture is a little dark, but Jill is still radiant regardless)

The Swedish Baby

Yep, a Swedish baby (for those of you without insider sources into the swedish world) is just as sweet, if not sweeter than, the acclaimed swedish fish (lol)

Rella and I breathed a sigh of relief when our good friend Targol came back from a visit to Sweden (where her family lives) Targol has been a wonderful friend of mine and caretaker for Rella, and she brough back several gifts from her beautiful country for both of us. Highlighted here, a swedish hat for Rella! Pretty soon all the babies on the block will be wanting one. For me and Duane, we delightfully consumed some Swedish chocolate (seriously delicious) that Targol brough back for us. Thanks Targol!

Ohio Trip

Avery and Brinley enjoyed their party at a HUGE jungle gym/game place in Polaris, Ohio. It would have been the crem-de-la-crem (excuse me for saying this wrong) for me as a kid. There was all sorts of yummy food, and the kids enjoyed the games.

After a night of partying, Rella and I headed home and found THIS -

Well, We actually found MANY animals at the Lebanon 4-H fair. I enjoyed watching several horse competitions (one's that I might have judged differently, but hey, it was fun to be in a familiar setting) and I met a very nice lady named Gayle. A definate highlight on our way home.

Hilliard Ohio - The Birthday Capitol!

This last week, Rella and I jumped in the car (well, I jumped, Rella more. . . just sat. . . in her car seat) for a 6 hour trip to Hilliard. I know what you are wondering: Yes. . . she did quite well - only a few tears near the end of the trip.

It was a great couple of days with my sister and her girls:

My little nieces are full of energy! Rella had a great time being smothered (almost literally, lol) with attention.

AND this joyous occasion came at perfect time: TWO of the girls (Brinley and Avery) and their sweet mom (Leah) have birthdays in July (can you BELIEVE it? What a great month) so I was able to attend their party.

Here's how the visit went (and I blog this with many thanks to my sweet sister and husband for making my stay so exciting, and for hosting Rella and I with the utmost care *thanks Leah and Cody*)

On the first day we visited COSI
It's this AMAZING children's museum that would have knocked the socks off of me as a kid, and still does as an adult (age is a state of mind, I guess that would explain my predicament :)

It was fun to go with the girls through "Poseidon's Adventure". This was a VERY creative way to teach children about water (and what better way is there to teach kids about water than to give them huge water guns? Someone knows what they are doing!)

what amazes me is the detail of these exhibits - I enjoyed thinking about what types of stage lighting I would do if it were my job to light up these brilliant sets.

They had many hands-on exhibits, including a chance to go in a little submarine. More on this adventure coming soon!

Chicago Theater - simply incredible

This last week I had the pleasure of enjoying two very well executed productions:

The Odd Couple at Raven Theater

This particular show had two men as the main characters (sometimes it is two women)

It was an intense show with lots of laughs and tension. Being sure of myself that this type of amazing theater must be a fluke, I had to attend another one:

Love's Labor's Lost at Oak Park Festival

All I can say is: Ceder City has new Rivals! At first I was skeptical, walking into this beautiful old park seeing a stage that looked somewhat thrown together (though the set pieces were beautiful, the stage itself didn't do the show justice) but I found myself enjoying every minute. Even during the intermission the technicians let me look at their cool lighting board. Rock on chicago! I can't wait to see more.

Transformers 3: Filming in Chicago

This last week, there have been several filmings for the movie Tranformers 3 in Chicago. Our first surprise related to this filming was on our street (Randolph) as we were cheefully heading out sunday morning to church. We were starting down our street when we noticed that policemen (and women) were stopping all traffic, and there were different helicopters swirling above us. At first I thought it might be one of the usual "airlifts" that they do atop some of the buildings at certain times, but then all the sudden I saw this.

These amazing stunt divers just LEAPT out of the helicopter and landed in the park right by our building. They looked like flying squirrels :)

Then, a couple of days later, I was driving down Michigan Avenue when the same thing happened: All cars were being rerouted. As I was driving by, I saw this horrific accident. Cars were piled about 5 high and looked all burned out - I couldn't believe it. But then I noticed a pattern, there were accident scenes all over the place, even on the sidewalk. Then I noticed the cameras. I just caught a glimpse, but it was fun to see how realistic the set looked. Something you don't see every day, I might even WATCH the movie now.

The FLOUTIST

Duane and I started the year with a goal for each of us to learn a new instrument (so COOL) Duane chose the flute, and has already started learning how to play on his own. Our evening entertainment is watching Rella enjoy her dad's practicing:

Good Times

I've been enjoying being a mom in the city! One of the great things about living here: I can decide to go get something at the store, put Rella in the stroller, and ten minutes later - We've arrived. The other day I decided to get her a doorway bouncer (you know those things that hang in the doorway and kids are strapped in and bounce up and down?) I had been reading about how these little toys can help develop coordination and muscle. I decided to get the more economical (my nice work for "cheapy-cheapy") version, and it was comically too big for Rella

She did, however, enjoy sucking on the sides - a good 20 minute activity (while mommy quickly reads about Freud in her textbook)

We had a wonderful vacation near Banff, Alberta this past July 4th weekend with my (Duane's) side of the family. You wouldn't believe the beautiful cabin we found--it had 5 bedrooms and a view of pristine forest in the valley below us. It had a Great Room with a vaulted ceiling that made it a wonderful space in which everyone could be present and together but not stepping on each others' toes.

As part of our family gathering, my brother, Dan who is a professional videographer decided to test out his new Canon 7D (an HD video camera). I think you'll enjoy the music video that came out of his work.

Hello All,

On Friday Duane, Rella, and I will be headed off for a wonderful week in Banff, Canada! (or, as I like to call it 'bamff')

Here's the itinerary:

Friday fly into Calgary, Alberta

Saturday move up to cabin in the beautiful woods of Fairmont Springs (yes, we may actually see some WILD Canadians, I can't wait)

We will be at the cabin until July 6th - feel free to call, but I may not get reception, and will call back when I can.

Here's a picture of the Cabin Duane found! I am so proud of him for forging this new family tradition. We look forward to seeing our Johnson Family (and having them meet the newest member of the family, little miss Rella)

GETCO Family Picnic 2010

This year Getco hosted their annual family picnic at the field museum:

It was a sunny day, and someone did an excellent job of planning the picnic. First Duane and I walked through the museum. Here I am running with the natives (silly Kelty)

They had some great activities on the patio of the museum: fondue, rock climbing, watching the soccer championship, face painting (In my case, arm painting), and a jumping game. They had a "Jungle" theme - even with the cookies!

The photographer took some pictures, I will post some of Duane, Rella and I when we get copies! Thanks Getco for a great Saturday! (Oh! did I mention they had all the ice cream novelties you could eat? My new favorite is "strawberry shortcake" Popsicle)

Tornado Warnings

Last wednesday (June 23rd) Duane and I were having a merry-old evening when we heard sirens go off in the city. If you've ever heard city-wide sirens, they can have a pretty eerie sound to them, and for us new-chicagoians we just though "Oh Shi-cago!" (lol)

After talking with our neighbors, we learned the the sirens warned of possible tornadoes in the area - and indeed, the storm outside looked like it could produce a tornado quite easily. Rain was pouring down, and the streets around downtown were flooding.

When the sirens went off the second time, I began to get a little nervous (we do live in a fishbowl, you know) and so Duane and I went down to the laundry room to "fold some laundry". The doorman told us there was nothing to worry about, but I wasn't taking any chances.

Well, There was no tornado (count your many blessings. . . ) but there was an amazing lightening show! See some of it here:

Ever since first grade, I have had two steadfast, loved friends: Claire and Ann. Here we are together at Ann's homecoming (from her LDS mission).

Introduction to the Chicago First Unitarian Universalist Congregation

Duane and I have found a new home (for the time being) in the Unitarian Universalist congregation here in Chicago. I hope this doesn't come as a shock to many of you - this will just be the first time that I have publicly (on my blog) written about our new spiritual home.

Perhaps some of you are wondering what the Unitarians are about? Here is a brief snippet of their non-credial principles:

The Seven Principles

There are seven principles which Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm and promote:

The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

The Buckingham Fountain

For Date night (yes, it's quite the official thing in the Johnson household) we visited Buckingham Fountain! Neaby there are some awesome Ice Cream Parlors, and we enjoyed watching the fountain shoot up while eating our pecan, carmel sundae. Thanks for a great night honey! Oh yeah, and Rella had a good time too :)

It was a beautiful day to go - and the Gardens around the square were also beautiful. I couldn't help but roll in the grass and get bugs all over me! (gotta do that at least once a month) Here is Duane and Rella

Memorial Day Parade

Today I saw one of the biggest parades of my LIFE.

Yes, It's true, my fellow Provonians. Chicago may actually RIVAL provo in it's paradeness. This parade honored the men and women who serve our country - There are so many!

Though I have mixed feelings about the wars we are engaged in - I do feel a great sense of pride seeing our service men and women. My sincerest gratitude also goes out to those families who have also lost family members in serving their country.

Some of the most selfless people I know, some of the most selfless people I have ever met, have served in our country's armed forces.

There were even some of my favorite furry friends in this parade!

Chicago has a plethora of exciting events during the summer, this is just the beginning! (Have I tempted any of you to come visit yet?. . . )

The Nelsons Visit

Though our little place is cozy, we certainly enjoyed having the Nelsons as our guests this past week. Julie Nelson has been a friend and mentor throughout my young life, and worked as the director for Adventure Time (My mom's daycare business) for many years. She even taught me when I was three! On the left is Julie, in the middle is a girl I hardly know (how did she get in this picture?) and on the right is Rachel (Julie's Daughter)

Thank you guys for the great late night chats - we hope you will come to our place if Roland has another conference in Chicago! (You were such great troopers sleeping on an aero, and a pull out bed)

As I usually do on Mondays, I was loading mounds of laundry into the basket with wheels to take down to the laundry room on the first floor. Usually, Rella gets the best seat as she rides on top of the basket in her carrier. Today has been a very hot, humid day (beautiful for Chicago) and Rella was a little grumpy at being so hot, so on the way to the elevator I took off her beautiful long-sleeve outfit to let her "ride free" thinking "Hey, It's Monday, there won't be THAT many people riding the service elevator" Haha.

Well, Much to Rella's delight and my embarrassment there were plenty of riders in the elevator. Including large group of very sweet, polite window washers complete with their harnesses and rope. I hadn't expected to see many people, so of course I was without makeup, with my usual 'fuzzy bun' and a thrown together outfit, looking rather pathetic if you ask me. Well, these window washers couldn't have been more congenial, a group of about six men (about my age) gathered around Rella's cart (there she was in her naked beauty, except for a diaper) and commensed oohhing and aahhhing at her. Well she just SOAKED it UP! She started making some of the loudest comments (in the form of "baaaahhhhwaaaa laaaaaaa, aaahhh, you know, the usual) and w0wed her audience. I wish I could have taken a picture of all these muscular, serious looking men gathered around a naked Rella giving her all the attention she could ever want.

As I have sat down to write this, she is making disgruntled sounds like "hey mom! Where did all those cute guys go?" Maybe one will swing by our window sometime soon :)

My Favorite Museum

Chicago has an amazing variety of Museums to enjoy. Within walking distance of our home, we can visit: The Shedd Aquarium, The Chicago Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The Adler Planetarium, and the Field Museum. There are even "Nature Museums" but I have to draw the line somewhere :) There is one Museum, however, outside of "Museum Campus" that is makes getting in the car worth it:

The Museum of Science and Industry has weeks worth of entertaining material for the curious mind. Duane and I decided to invest in a membership, and haven't regretted it in the least. It is fast becoming our 'weekend retreat' where we can learn about everything from storms

They call this exhibit "Science Storms". There is even replica of a tornado! This last week we visited an exhibit that almost made me sick . . .

Do you remember "Bodies" the exhibit the toured around the United States a while back? This exhibit similarly displays all you could ever want to see . . . and more (not in the objectionable sense, but in the "WOW, I didn't know the heart looked like that" sense)

It was especially neat to see cross-sections of real once-alive humans

You can see why you might need to take a break after an exhibit like this! There was so much more, but I'll just say it was fascinating, educational, and interactive in ways that make this museum a dynamic learning place.

Duane and I choose a new exhibit to peruse every time we visit, and since exhibits are always changing, there is always something new to see! I love Chicago!

Spring has Sprung at Harbor Point!

Yes, It's true, my fetish with equines (DON'T take that the wrong way) began in preschool. Now I have found a new temporary home at a stable called "Memory Lane" I am leasing a horse called Dawson. Pics coming soon :)

Duane surprised me with the most wonderful evening out! In celebration of our 6th year of marriage (wow, has it really been that long, time really does fly) Duane purchased tickets to see the musical sensation: STOMP

Before skipping off to the show, Duane and I arranged for our FIRST babysitter (how cool is that?!) and Rella was in good hands with a friend of mine from school. Here is the little vocalist preparing for her night with Targol

What I didn't know until that night was that DINNER was included. We ate with a group of friends at the oldest Italian Resteraunt in Chicago: Italian Village. It had a fun Atmosphere:

I enjoyed some of the best lasagna I've ever had! here a picture with our group, at a bar right before the show: Nick is on the far left, then there is Shawn, Ross, Stephanie, and Duane.

It was so neat! The actors/Actresses were amazing dancers, and presented an entire 2 hours of music using common objects (brooms, dustpans, sticks, trash cans, street signs, ect) It was very entertaining, and even though NONE of the actors spoke at any point during the show, you could see their unique characters.

Trip to UTAH

"Because it's Utah, Uuuu-taaahhhh"

Yep, I still remember the cheezy opening song to the musical "Utah" (can you believe there is a musical 'utah'? seriously folks)

What a wonderful trip - Rella was an angel on the plane both ways (I received lots of compliments on how good she was, but I really couldn't take the credit for that one) and we saw loved ones every spare moment.

Our adventure started with Mommie haggling for a very cute little rental car (I got a good deal - you'd have been proud, Arian!)

On the way back from the Airport, we stopped at Thanksgiving Point where I visited old co-workers and Rella saw the "barn yard". I'm still a mommie-in-training because I only got a picture of this cute horse - - - better than nothing :D

Isin't he CUTE? I think a hobbit should be riding him. That evening we went to go see "Grandpa Lewis" for the first time.

The following three days we visited:

My friend(s) at Oak Hills Stable: Maryann and BOB (I do miss that horse) and of course, the Vaulters.

We also visited our Aunt Mel, and Rella had a wonderful time playing with her new friend

And a few wonderful trips to Cafe Fresh (with Aunt Mel and Dad, Rella commented on the wonderful breastmilk that resulted from the delicious food)

We also enjoyed a visit to Sundance (Rella said "What are those green things mommie? where is the concrete? I don't see Sears tower!) I think it was good exposure for all of us.

REAL MEN WEAR BABIES

The Dragons and the Dungons - or was that Dungons and Dragons?

This last saturday, Duane and I were 'initiated' into the Dungons and Dragons experience!!!

This game is no joke! It's seriously involving and full of role playing, ton's of little dice that have too many sides to count, little figurines, and a board that you can draw landscapes on. For years in High School I had friends invite me to 'dungons and dragons' parties, and I always wondered what it was all about - and now I have an idea!

Blackmail for the teen years

Though I never expect I will need to use this little piece of blackmail. Her she is displaying one of her quirky, and very cute, sleeping positions.

At first I wasn't sure how I felt about this outfit - but now I am beholden to her powers of 'cuteness' and I couldn't agree more

EGG-xelent Tradition

For Easter, Duane and I carried on one of many traditions from my childhood and dyed easter eggs. But, of course, Duane's creativity overtook him at the most fortutious moment and he made some egg-masterpieces. (I'm so proud, can't you tell? I mean, when does Duane ever settle for 'ordinary') That is one of the things I love about him, creativity. Here is a picture - the row on top are my eggs (quite amazing if I may say so myself) and the bottom row are Duanes (notice especially the one on the far right) Rella smiled from the sidelines in support of our new family tradition.

Rella's FIRST road trip

After my brother Arian visited over the weekend, Rella and I packed up the trusty old Rav4 and headed to Ohio to see LEAH and her sweet girls. Leah came to visit US right after Rella was born, so it was our turn to visit her :)

Leah is beautiful: Inside and out

Funny Story: Usually the drive from Chicago to Columbus Ohio is about 5 hours. Before rushing out the door Tuesday morning, I printed my map, choosing the most direct route, and packed Rella up into the car. What I DIDN'T know (haha) is that the route I chose was the "Scenic Route" Complete with every friggin country road in Indiana! It was quite funny actually, and no, my force field didn't save me.

So, Anyway, after 11 hours of driving, I finally arrived safe and sound at Leah's home that night. Rella was a sweetheart, but we were both greatly relieved when we stepped in the door.

While we were there we enjoyed swimming, delicious food, crafts, and great family time :)

Arian's Visit

It's now been two weekends since my brother, Arian, came to visit (It's better to blog late than never, eh?) and it was a memorable weekend.

To describe Arian in a few words: he is an energetic, devoted, service-oriented, live life to the fullest kind of guy. You can be sure that Arian always has a book full of cool ideas for activities, just begging to be enjoyed. His devotion to his family is unquestionable, and Duane and I enjoy being apart of that group :) Oh, and I couldn't forget to mention work-ethic while we are on the topic of Arian. As a realator for Pulte Homes, in "Sun City" Mesquite Nevada, Arian has topped the charts in home-sales, and I have the suspicion that it's due mainly to his hard work and effort (and his Charisma helps too, in a genuine way).

When Arian and Duane get together, it's like the "Brain Lab" has landed, and they are always thinking of good business ideas and having deep discussions on every topic imaginable.

And of course, Rella got to get some "Arian-style" bonding time :D (Arian was also a great help when he was awake - I just think it's sweet how easily he can fall asleep)

Rella has gained a good amount of weight, but is still quite dwarfish when compared to our couch :)

Rella's Smile

Rella has begun to recognize our faces and smile when we talk to her. . . it's darling. Just wanted to share the love.

Here she is, saying, in essence "I'm ready to go mom!"
Heaven forbid we go a day without a walk - it's Rella's new favorite thing
(luckily, I have many errands to do downtown too)
The instant I put her in the stroller and start moving, she is out. The only thing that bothers me about the city is when I pass by people that are smoking (I worry about her lungs) Otherwise, there are more than enough sites to see!

Duane and I are both looking forward to visiting with my brother, Arian, this weekend.

War Protest

Thursday evening Duane (and Rella) and I attended a protest. Though I was not sure if I agreed with all the statements being made at the rally, I do believe that awareness of current issues is a great beginning to being a better citizen.

After a couple of hours of listening to speakers, I can back one statement "WAR is NOT the answer" Honestly, I cannot say I know everything that happened before our nation attacked Iraq (can anyone?) but I DO agree that we entered the war on immoral grounds and without exhausting all our other options.

I hope this post will be seen as anything BUT "anti-patriotic". I believe the best thing we can do for our troops is to support them as people and bring them home. We have been 7 years in Iraq, much longer than most involved had anticipated, and we still have no clear exit strategy. If the millions that we are spending on war every day were to be re-directed to peaceful stratagies, education, creative poverty relief, and empowerment of women, can you imagine the difference?

I am not a politician, but I believe women's rights violations in the middle East are some of the grossest violations of human rights on earth - and it does need to change. However, one culture cannot impose it's vision of "freeing women" on another culture and be met with success. From the history of the world, and especially our nation, it is clear that to empower a marginalized group, they need to be able read and write, to be able to communicate, and receive education. And before these needs can be actualized, women especially need a basic sense of security and enough food to eat (If you are worrying about your children dying - why would you even think about expanding your mind?) .

It's true that the answers many, fractured and often unclear. There is no magic solution. However, there is much still that can be done.
