What the Heck? Back Spasms HURT

Thursday afternoon I went to the Chiropractor - a nice benefit which I enjoy from our health care plan. By Thursday evening Duane took me to the ER at Northwestern University.

I guess Back Spasms can hurt really, really, badly.

Here is what happened: I was running out the door of the Chiropractors office and grabbed my bags (I had a few items for our guests visit last weekend) and by the time I got home, my back felt like it was splitting in half. While on the phone with my Sister, Leah, I realized that that pain was only getting worse. I called Duane and he decided to come home from work early to help me get back to the Chiropractor, and then cried on the phone with my mom (thanks mom :)

We went back to the Chiropractor, and by this time I breathing and moving my legs was getting very painful. She was very helpful and nice, and diagnosed a "back spasm" and put some ointment on my back. Though we were grateful for the treatment, I still felt like something was very wrong.

Patient and loving Duane took me to the hospital in a cab, and the Driver was very nice but dropped us off at the wrong building. After some tears, we found the right place, and I was admitted immediately because of being pregnant (that was very nice, the nurse didn't know I was 5 months pregnant until I mentioned it ) With more tears, two doctors checked out my back and confirmed that, indeed, I was being plagued by a very bad back spasm, and they offered me a narcotic. I decided to try extra strength Tylenol instead. I was also diagnosed with a UTI (urinary tract infection) and received medication for that.

Though I was immensely relieved to know that everything was all right, I was still in some of the worst pain I've ever experienced.

I wonder how I could fall off horses for years and recover very quickly, but tweak my back and be out for 2 days!

I guess it was time to learn some humility, which I think I did. Our guests arrived, which brightened the evening, but that night was long. I threw up all the contents of my stomach, couldn't lie down most of the night because the pain was worse in that position. Sweet Duane was there by my side, and held me while I shook from frustration and fear (and, yes, the pain too)

Isn't it amazing how much you realized your spouse loves you in times like these?

Thank you sweetheart

Needless to say, I made it through the night much humbled and after a day of recoup, I was myself again (a huge blessing)

the end :D

Oh, Kelty! I'm so sorry! That sounds absolutely miserable! I'm glad to hear you're feeling better, though. Take care of yourself, girl!

Sounds like a miserable experience -- I hope it's your last!

I couldn't help but notice that your spasm started after you visited the chiropractor the first time and that it wasn't able to fix the problem when you went back. I wonder if the chiropractor didn't inadvertently cause the problem in the first place?

Keep sharing your stories! I may not comment much but Lorey and I love to hear about you guys. We miss you!

Hi Kelty that experience sounded miserable. It's amazing how fast something like that can come on. I'm glad you are better now. I love reading your posts and all the lovely tributes to Duane. I love knowing couples who are making it work so beautifully. I can't believe it took you so long to start your own blog. You are a natural!

I can't believe that! Was it because of your Chiropractic adjustment? Had you been having back pain before?
Is everything still good?
Sorry to hear about that. It is really scary when things happen like that when you're pregnant!
Hope you have no more problems.
By the way - we really have to get together! Do you guys want to come down and pick pumpkins and apples?
