Marriage and Family BOOKS

In undergraduate, and now graduate school, I have studied marriage and families. Once and awhile I come accross a rare gem - a book that encapsulates the best advice, research, and principles concerning family life. Here are some of those books :)

BOOK #1: THE MOMMY BRAIN

A little synopsis "‘Mommy brain’ is the excuse offered by harried parents who forget minor details, but journalist Ellison, the mother of two young boys, turns the phrase on its head. While researchers find that women do less well at standardized neuropsychological tests at one-day postpartum (duh!), mothers later show improved performance in crucial areas of perception, efficiency, resiliency, motivation, and emotional intelligence"
library journal

If you want some real evidence of the benefits of motherhood, and the current issues surrounding childrearing in the 21st century - this is it!

But Kelty. . . you ask. . . that seems somewhat sexist - what about a book that includes males AND females?

Do not despair - My other favorite is inclusive of both males and females, and how to help them interact.

Book #2: SAVING YOUR MARRIAGE BEFORE IT STARTS

Honestly, the most concise, easy to read relationship enhancement I've seen. This book was written for couples considering marriage, but is just as applicable for those already married. When so many societal forces pull at the basic fabric of marriages, it's important to continually "work on" your relationships. Not only does that fortify the family, but promotes greater happiness and fufillement in family life.

well. . . what about kids? HAH - funny you should ask that

Book #3: THE INTENTIONAL FAMILY

Probably the BEST book on strengthening families that I've read. Easy read, lasting effects.

That seems to wrap things up. . . well. . . almost. Please forgive me for typing the "S" word, but sex is an important component of relationships also. If you would like to learn more about, uplift, and understand this special human act on a deeper level, I would HIGHLY recommend this Christian-Based book on intimacy. You don't even need to read the whole book to learn more about yourself and your partner - there are sections for specific topics and questions.

Book #4: THE ACT OF MARRIAGE

Your textbook are so interesting when you are studying life :)

So glad you've got all these marvelous resources. I love the idea of an INTENTIONAL family. It encourages thinking towards possibilities.

Love, Mom
